The king and priests held the most power of any group in Sumer. They enforced the laws in hopes of satisfying the gods. Priests also served as a city's doctors. Many priests in ancient Sumer shaved their heads as a sign so people would recognize them as priests. They also kept many slaves.
The people of the upper class were the richest people besides priests. They usually owned slaves and did very little work for themselves. These people usually wore expensive garments as well as jewelry.
The lower class consisted mainly of the working class. They usually dressed similar to the upper class. However, the material of their clothes was usually different and/or cheaper. Also, if they wore jewelry, it was usually less precious stones than the upper class.
Slaves were the lowest of the low in ancient Sumer. They were considered property rather than citizens. When a city was taken over, its people were brought back as slaves. The majority of a city's slaves belonged to the king and priests.
